Las Cruces firefighters responded to an abandoned building fire Sunday afternoon.
Just after 4:30 p.m., Sunday, April 26, firefighters were called to an active fire in a building on the 700 block of N. Mesquite Street. The first crew arrived about four minutes after being dispatched to find a large amount of fire coming from the back of the building. High winds created volatile fire conditions. Fire burned through the roof and attic.
Crews completely searched the building and were then ordered to exit for defensive firefighting operations. The fire was brought under control within about 15 minutes of arrival.
The Las Cruces Fire Department notes that this building has experienced five fire incidents since 2024. Sunday’s fire caused significant structural damage to the roof and exterior wall.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
