Carla Ragan, Executive Director of Federal Programs, leads a tour through the newly constructed Family Support Center
Las Cruces Public Schools welcomed several state lawmakers last week for a thank-you luncheon and guided tour of district facilities funded through recent legislative appropriations. Held at the LCPS Family Support Center, the event provided an opportunity for district leaders to showcase the direct impact of state funding on student programs, staff wellness, and family services.
Among those in attendance were Sen. Jeff Steinborn, Sen. Carrie Hamblen, Rep. Angelica Rubio, Rep. Crystal Brantley, Rep. Sarah Silva, Rep. Micaela Lara Cadena, Rep. Raymundo “Ray” Lara, Rep. Joanne Ferrary, and Sen. Bill Soules.
Following the luncheon, legislators toured Phase 2 of the Family Support Center, an outdoor classroom space, the district’s culinary arts food truck, and the Employee Wellness Center—each made possible through legislative support.
The Family Support Center, a cornerstone of LCPS’s community-based approach, continues to expand services for students and families, offering centralized access to resources, programs, and support systems. Funding secured through state partnerships has helped move the project forward, including millions allocated toward planning, design, and construction of expanded facilities.
Additionally, lawmakers saw firsthand how investments in Career and Technical Education are preparing students for future careers. The district’s mobile culinary arts food truck, funded through legislative appropriations, provides hands-on learning opportunities while expanding access for students, including those in special education programs.
Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the district and state leaders.
“Legislative support plays a critical role in the success of our students,” Ruiz said. “These investments allow us to create innovative learning environments, expand opportunities in programs like career and technical education, and ensure our students and families have access to the resources they need to thrive. We are grateful for our lawmakers’ partnership and their commitment to public education in Las Cruces.”
The tour also included a look inside the LCPS Staff Wellness Center, reinforcing the district’s commitment to staff well-being and an essential component of student success.
LCPS leaders expressed appreciation for the lawmakers’ continued advocacy and support, noting that these investments directly enhance the district’s ability to serve students, families, and the broader community.
Overall, LCPS secured more than $7.8 million in legislative funding to support projects and educational initiatives across the district.
