Las Cruces police are asking witnesses for video evidence from Saturday morning’s shooting in the parking lot of Whiskey Dicks that injured one man and killed 28-year-old Javier Velasquez.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, Las Cruces police and fire were dispatched to the report of shots fired with injuries in the parking lot of Whiskey Dicks, 101 E. Union Ave.
Police learned that two men, 28-year-old Javier Velasquez and Gabriel Lucero, 37, were involved in a physical confrontation in the parking lot. At some point, Lucero is suspected of arming himself with a firearm and discharging at least one round that struck Velasquez. Police learned that Lucero was then shot by some unknown person.
Velasquez and Lucero were transported to area hospitals. Velasquez succumbed to his injuries while Lucero remains hospitalized. Charges against Lucero are pending.
Police are still trying to learn the identity of the person who shot Lucero.
